El azabache · The jet

What is jet?

Jet is a type of lignite. It is a black mineral; light, warm and soft to the touch.  Derived from the fossilization of Jurassic trees, 60 millions years ago, at the time of the dinosaurs.

These Jurassic trees lay buried in earth’s depths; ancient mines and underground galleries are the means used to extract the mineral. The jet appears in the shape of streaks; with a thickness of a few centimeters; incrusted between stone and sand. Jet is a very delicate material, and it is necessary to extract by hand- using great care and expertise.

Where is it found?

The best jet in the world is found in Asturias, Spain and Whitby in the United Kingdom. The Jet in Asturias has an intense black color, with an incomparable texture and hardness. In Spain it is extracted from the area called Marin: part of the Asturian Jurassic Coast. Nowadays this coast is known as the “Dinosaurs Coast”, a Jurassic land with plenty of fauna and flora of the time of the Jurassic age. Jet is the fossil material, with vegetal origin most important and representative of this age. With its historic manifestation and characteristic quality, Austurian Jet is truly unique in the world.

Propiedades

Properties

Given Jet’s unique characteristics, it has always been considered a mineral with healing properties. It was used as defense against the “Evil Eye”, hence its fame as a talisman of: “ The Way of Saint James”, and as a protection for pilgrims. Currently this sense is still deeply rooted in Galicia; embodied in the “Figa de Azabache”: an amulet shaped as a tight fist.

The jet tradition

Jet was highly regarded, and has been used as ornamental stone since ancient times by Egyptians, Phoenicians, Etruscans and Romans. The most antique piece of jet jewelry found was in Caldas Cave, in Oviedo and is around 17,000 years old.

Jet and silver crafting is the most distinctive traditional trade in Santiago de Compostela. In 12th Century, in Azibechería Square, Santiago; a thriving business of handcrafted shells existed. Carved from jet, and made with tin and lead, pilgrims use to take these as souvenirs.

Jet jewelry was also very popular during XIX century in England. During the reign of Queen Victoria a protocol dictated that only jet jewelry could be worn at court during periods of official mourning. This royal endorsement resulted in the expansion of jet in England, becoming the height of fashion for women of the time.
